My initial test was with Rick’s loaner SD1, but recently Rick was also kind enough to loan me his SD1M. In going through my initial offset calibration for my various lenses I noticed that the offset variation was much less than with the SD1. On further testing I discovered that setting the offset to the average variation resulted in a fairly accurate focus at all FL from 5’ to infinity, a much better result than with the SD1.

I think it could easily be just that Rick’s SD-1 was an early body and with the SD-1M they have better consistency in the product. Or that Rick’s equipment is sometimes cursed…
